It’s amazing in the Camp Sherman area of the Metolius. I love it there. My family went there nearly every year for awhile when I was young. I learned to fly fish on this river and loved every moment we spent there. Being there as an adult brings back all those great memories and the feelings associated with them. Fishing the river with mom and Kev, Bill teaching me how to fish there, floating down it on inner tubes, catching fish and flopping them up onto shore right at my grandparents feet because I was small and didn’t have a net, freezing after spending too long in the cold water, sniffing the vanilla smelling goodness of the trees, exploring the area in the car with the family singing those crazy Bill songs, eating ice cream sandwiches purchased at the store… the list goes on. For me this is one of two apexes of happiness of my childhood. This place, and the farm my grandparents lived at when I was a kid, are tops. What great warm memories. What joy. What happiness. I love the Camp Sherman area. I spend time there and not only enjoy the moments I have now, as an adult, but I remember all the good things about what it was to be a kid there. It’s a wonderful feeling every time I go.

Our home away from home for a few days. Peaceful. Tranquil. Relaxing. I don’t have to say any more than that.

The Davis Lake West campground is an amazing place. Several years ago there was a pretty devastating fire in the area. All the area right around the campground was burned to a crisp. When you drive down into the campground it’s like going through a forest ghost town. Dead trees everywhere. Miraculously though once you get right to the campground… trees, green, underbrush. It’s like an oasis in the middle of the desert. Strange… and beautiful.
The area where the fire was is starting to show major signs of life… underbrush really starting to develop, small trees sprouting up that will one day tower over the landscape. It’s lovely. A beautiful reminder that life springs and moves forward, constantly flowing. There’s always something new, always something beautiful, always. If you look, and sometimes you have to look hard, you can always find it. Nature is amazing and life is a constant and stunning miracle.

Interesting and strange trees about camp.
Roots, originally uploaded by Tokenhippygirl.
This was pretty cool. The roots of this tree were pretty exposed. Must have been some pretty high tides at times affecting the river. Made for some funky shots.
Buddha, originally uploaded by Tokenhippygirl.
Our Japanese garden is just starting to get good. The maple isn’t quite leafed out, but the Buddha is looking fabulous.
Winter Afternoon, originally uploaded by Tokenhippygirl.
Like I said previously, it was lovely out. Who could look at this and not be awed by what’s right there in front of us. We are so lucky to live in such an amazing and magical place.
Winter, originally uploaded by Tokenhippygirl.
I like this one. Simple and pretty plain though it might be, it says it all about a lovely winter day. Crisp blue sky, trees with no leaves, and a bird flying above.

Anyone tired of all the snow besides me? I’m sick of it. Sick and tired. I can’t take it anymore. I think I’m going to go insane. … not really. I won’t really go insane from looking at snow. Seriously though… we have had snow since December 14. With no break. Granted, at times it’s just been this left over pile that won’t melt, but still. There it’s been… the pile. Taunting us. I want sun and warmth. I want to wear t-shirts and shorts, or at least start wearing flip flops. These are simple things. Simple wants. I’m not asking much…. am I?

And this was on my way home.

OK, I admit it… I messed around with the color of this one. Couldn’t help myself. I ended up liking it though. I don’t much tweak my photographs, but once in awhile it’s fun to just play. The modern day dark room.
Afternoon, originally uploaded by Tokenhippygirl.
It was so lovely walking yesterday. Afterward we went to Maggie’s for a lovely dinner and a viewing of the movie Mama Mia. If you haven’t seen it, do. It was one of those feel good films. All fun. Oh, and dinner was especially tasty as well. Thanks Maggie. You rock.

I know… loads of shots of this tree, but hell… it’s beautiful.

Cutting Down The Tree, originally uploaded by Tokenhippygirl.
Martin cutting down the Christmas Tree on our neighbors property. Doug is the best to let us get a tree. He used to have a Christmas Tree farm there and has long since given it up, but there were still some great trees there for the picking. This being one of them. Martin did a fabulous job cutting it down especially since it was his first try at it. Well done Martin. Mary and I carried it back to the house after it was cut down and the kids decorated it, and the house.

Great shadows under a weeping willow tree at Cathedral Park, Portland, Oregon.
Perched, originally uploaded by Tokenhippygirl.
I took some random shots while we were at Davis Lake. This is one of them. I loved how this log was just sort of perched there, bleached out by the sun.

The sunken garden at Butchart in what used to be a rock quarry. Spectacular.
Madrone, originally uploaded by Tokenhippygirl.
This beautiful tree, a Pacific Madrone, is the center piece of the sunken garden at Butchart. It’s red smooth bark is lovely.

We went out to dinner with friends last night, thanks for the great company by the way, at Mississippi Pizza and then took a stroll along Mississippi Avenue. It was a beautiful warm blue sky filled night. It seemed like everyone from the city was out and about enjoying the much anticipated, but rarely seen in recent months, glorious sun. Ah, and it was so good to wear shorts and flip flops. Very relaxing.
I took some shots as we walked, this being one of them. This tree was awesome. Huge, gnarly, limbs bent in impossible positions… just glorious. True natural sculpture.

We only left our house yesterday for a little walk in the woods nearby. The moss on these trees is a constant reminder that we live in a rain forest. It grows everywhere and can actually be incredibly beautiful.
I read this quote today in the Sierra Club’s Daily Ray of Hope e-mail. I loved it and thought I’d share.
