Christmas Feet

Finally, some last words on Christmas. We couldn’t get through the day without the must have foot shot. Here we are, in all of our pajama clad, footed glory. The pups didn’t get in on the action, but they were there. One big happy family. On another note… just want to say to Don, Karen’s dad, that we are thinking of you, and sending you much love.

This week’s theme for the hunt is Dark. I took this one in December last year at The Grotto. The candlelight was beautiful and was even more so after dark. Really lovely.

This weeks photo hunt topic: Messy. This candle was making a mess, but you have to have candles when you have Christmas dinner, yes? …hence the bowl.

We’re heading out this afternoon… road trip! If we’re lucky, and the weather holds, we’ll be in Vegas by Sunday. Woo Hoo!

I made this… no, not this year silly, many many many many years ago. Seems a tad scary looking now, but I’m sure at the time I didn’t think so.  The fact that this is still put up every year at mom’s place is a testament to a mother’s love for her daughter.  I love you too mom.

Can of Soup Anyone?

December 18, 2007 tokenhippygirl Leave a comment

I’m sitting here tired and sore. Today was the day we sorted food… canned goods, dry goods, etc… for the annual Kiwanis food drive. And before you ask, no, I’m not a member… but I know some. Hence my reason for helping out with the food drive.

Let me tell ya… sorting food is back breaking work. This year I was at the soup station. Kids, from a local alternative school, took the food from the very large pile in the center of the room and sorted it according to type by using shopping carts to move around to various stations where they left off cans from their cart o’ goods. From experience I can say… people like to donate soup. I stood there, loading cans into boxes, counting, and numbering said boxes for a good 4 and a half or five hours. Then, after the sorting, after the huge pile was gone, and after the kids left, we went to each station doing master counts adding up the numbers labeled on each of the boxes. Loading those boxes and moving them around made me want to buy stock in Doans Pills. Isn’t that the sore back medication? I can’t remember, I’ve never used it.

I ‘m really not complaining… much. Just tired and sore. But you know… this year was a banner year for donations. Over 18,000 items. Pretty cool. It makes me feel good to be a part of it. Knowing there are families in need out there who will be getting the fruits of all that labor today. I’m sore… but it’s worth it. It always is.  Can of soup anyone?

In A Nutshell

We spent most of the last weekend finishing up shopping for Christmas gifts for Mary, Martin, Karen’s parents, sister, brother in law, our nephew and niece. I know it’s kind of early, or not if you’re some people, but we have to get things mailed off to the kids before we leave tomorrow for San Jose just to make sure they get everything by Christmas. This mailing to England is tricky, but we’ll get the hang of it.

San Jose… tomorrow we jump on the Amtrak and are taking the train down to see and spend Thanksgiving with Karen’s parents, and her sister and her family. I’m excited. Both by the prospect of taking the train (how fun, we got a mini sleeper car) and of seeing Karen’s family. Plus, I’m ready for some tasty bird as well. Ah Thanksgiving, the day when we are expected to eat too much and then be semi catatonic the rest of the day. Just lovely.

As for the rest of our weekend… the power went out on Sunday afternoon. Good thing we hadn’t started making dinner yet. It was out for a couple of hours. Kinda nice really. We just lit some candles, grabbed a blanket, and sat chatting in our cozy living room. Weston got loads of attention as well, which I’m sure he appreciated.

Now, it’s Tuesday. Last night we wrapped presents. All the stuff we’d purchased over the weekend and then some. It was like a little elf assembly line. You wrap that batch over there and I’ll do these…. worked out pretty well, I must say. Two back aches later and we were done. At least with the first round. Everyone else’s stuff will get purchased and wrapped after we get back from the great Thanksgiving train adventure.

The train adventure… we have downloaded some television shows, we have some movies, we have cameras, we have loads of music, some books, a deck of cards, and a travel game set. I think we’re good to go. All that’s left is to find parking at the station, find our little roomette on the train, and be off. Taking the train… sort of a romantic notion. I like it.
