I went to the doctor once for a double ear infection and he asked me the same thing. "Do you ever stick things in your ears?". I was 19. Sometimes I don't think doctors are actually paying attention when they ask these questions. They just have a checklist of things to say and they're going to get through them all no matter how inappropriate.
