Storm Approaching

Continued weekend recap… We hung out at the house most of the late afternoon on Sunday. Just the four of us relaxing and trying to stay cool. Originally we’d planned on firing up the fire pit and roasting some stuff for dinner, but then… weather change. The clouds started to roll in, the thunder could be heard in the distance, and a few rain drops indicated a cookout might not be the way to go… so, plan b. We headed over to Broadway and some dinner at Aztec Willies where we enjoyed some decent Mexican food, a margarita, and the viewing of some of the Olympic swimming trials. A very nice dinner. This photo was taken with my iPhone camera just after we crossed over the Freemont Bridge toward downtown. Pretty cool sky that night.

Saturday Market

The four of us ventured out to Saturday Market Sunday afternoon to check it out and see what was what. We went there after having stopped on NW 23rd for bagel dogs and a bagel breakfast sandwich. We actually ended up buying some art at Saturday Market. A fantastic new artist we’d not seen there before. Apparently she’s been there on and off for three years, but is now much more regular. I think we’ll probably get something else from her in the future. Really amazing stuff.

Getting Ready

I decided to include another Zoo concert photo from Saturday evening. This one is of the stage pre-show. The other I already posted is actually from the same spot facing the other direction. As you can tell, we had good seats. That’s what I’m talkin’ about….

Oh, and a big PS… the Indigo Girls were awesome.  It was just the two of them with their guitars and occasionally a third woman on piano and accordion.  Wow.  You can tell they’ve been doing this together for a long time.  Impeccable timing, excellent harmonies, and just a great flow to the show.  They were on and it was really amazing.  If you’re into great music, great harmonies, and music with a message definitely check them out.  You will not, I guarantee it, be disappointed.

A Couple of Good Films

We also saw a couple of pretty darn good movies in the last few days. The first, Lars and the Real Girl, a very quirky and sweet little movie written by Nancy Oliver and starring Ryan Gosling. I won’t try to explain it here other than to say that the movie has an almost fable-esque quality to it. So, check out the link and then check out the movie. It sounds strange, but it’s really very very sweet. We liked it a lot. The second, August Rush, didn’t get very good reviews, but we liked it none the less. It also felt a little bit like a fable, and though very improbable, it was totally enjoyable. This is the kind of movie where you have to suspend what you believe might actually be possible and just go on the ride. It’s, yes, another sweet movie. No action sequences, and many moments where you might say to yourself, uh huh, sure, that wouldn’t happen, but warm and fuzzy by the end. It makes you feel like anything is possible and that the world is a good place. Not a bad way to spend two hours.

To continue the recap of the last few days…

Saturday we went to see the Cowboy Junkies and the Indigo Girls at the Oregon Zoo. Man, what a great place to see a show. Sitting in little chairs on the lawn, really good sound, really good view, a bottle of wine, some fruit, a t-shirt buying opportunity, the company of good friends, running into other good friends, a convenient and easy MAX ride to get there, decent food, hanging out with my sweetie, and some fantastic music. I ask you, what else does a person need?

In The Thick of It

A little recap of the last few days events to follow….

Last Friday, June 27, Karen and I went to watch a friend’s (OK Shawn, this is your blog debut!! Woo Hoo!!) daughter, Saige, play in a basketball tournament. I used this picture because most of the shots I took were blurry. Bummer, but what can I say, it was the lighting. Better that than bad photography, which is really the more likely reason for things not turning out so well. Anywhoo… here they are, Saige’s team, in the thick of things. It was a pretty great game actually. Who knew the competition at the Junior High level would be so intense and good. It was impressive! Plus, it was great to see Shawn. It’s always a great time hanging out with you girl, so sad we live in different states. Oh, and… your daughter is tall. I felt like I was visiting the land of the giants hanging out with ya’all. I believe I even got a crick in my neck from lookin’ up so much.

Initial Word Reactions Quiz

I copied this from my friend L’s blog, Tin Can Canoe. Check it out if you have the time, she’s brilliantly creative.

The idea behind the quiz: “this is called “FIRST REACTIONS QUIZ”. You have to type the FIRST thing that comes to mind whenever you read these 31 things. You can’t think and go back and change your answers. TIP: erase all of the other persons answers first… that way u can think in blank.”
