This building used to be the exchange, and is now The Royal Exchange Theatre. It’s very cool. The theater is built inside the older building. Sort of a building within a building. We went to see Shakespeare’s Henry V here this evening. It’s theater in the round, tiered, and very cozy so our seats, third row up from the stage, were excellent. I have to say… Shakespeare, in England, performed by English actors… really terrific.
Our night at the theatre followed a lovely few hours wandering around downtown Manchester getting the tour. Martin lived in Manchester for 9 years, so he knows the city well. We hit the highlights, including the Town Hall, the statue of Abe Lincoln, gay town, Exchange Square, Manchester Cathedral, a nice pub (where Martin used to hang out during his university days) for a pint and visit with Martin’s friend, Paul, who met us there.
It was, as everything has been to this point, a very very nice day. Tomorrow I think we’re going to head to Morecombe, the town just west of Lancaster that’s on the sea. We hear there will be some great picture taking opportunities so look for some additions here again tomorrow evening.

This part of the city was bombed in 1996. Most of the area was destroyed, but was rebuilt as it was before the bombing.

Mary and Martin made dinner for us last night… as I type this it’s now just after noon, Tuesday. Dinner was… delicious. They have the entertaining thing down completely. Great food, great house to dine in, great company. It was splendid.
After dinner we played a game called Who’s In The Bag. It’s a British game, so we didn’t always know who was in the bag, but it was fun none the less. The kids kicked our butts, but what can we say, we are older, not as fast, and… we tried. After that we enjoyed a game of four handed cribbage with some tea and biscuits (they are like cookies and very tasty). It was a really nice evening.
Today… we go to Manchester to see a bit of the city and watch a Shakespeare play. Yes, Shakespeare in England. How could it get any better than that?

When you live in Lancaster you usually don’t have room to grow a garden in your own yard so residents rent little parcels of land in this huge area.

Still on the famous, at least to us, sheep walk. At this point the path has left the canal and enters sheep pastures.

As you walk along the canal out of town, on what the kids like to call the sheep walk, the scenery is beautiful.

This is Mary and Martin’s favorite bridge along the canal. The effect of the reflection with the bridge and the path is excellent.
